Skin Clinic

Australia has one of the highest incidences of skin cancer in the world and it can affect all age groups.  Early detection, identification and treatment are key to improving possible outcomes.  Uraidla Family Practice is now offering a Skin Clinic service to provide screening, diagnosis and treatment in a convenient and familiar setting.  Our doctors Dr Tim Simpson and Dr Matt Piche will lead the service but patients are free to elect another doctor – Please let reception staff know when booking to arrange a “Skin Clinic” appointment for appropriate time allocation.

Initial Consultation

A full body skin check is done with a dermatoscope.  It is painless and typically lasts 15-20 minutes.  We recommend that you don’t wear any make up, nail polish or tanning products during this appointment.

Any moles, spots and lesions identified as being suspicious can be photographed with a high-definition camera for monitoring or progress directly to excision/treatment.

Skin Biopsy/Excision

Where deemed appropriate, the doctor may schedule you in for a subsequent appointment to undertake a biopsy or excision.  A biopsy is for diagnostic purposes and can be done either as a punch or a shave biopsy.  In some cases, the cancer may be removed with a simple excision.  Excisions are generally deeper or wider than a biopsy and may need stitches afterwards.

Follow Up

Skin Checks are recommended to be done yearly if you’re over 50 or have a family history of skin cancer and two yearly if you’re under 50.  Regular self-examination between check ups will also help monitor for changes
